I agree that Obama's choosing of Rick Warren should be respected. Obama chose Warren in attempt to make his inauguration day as diverse as possible. I think its great that Obama is trying to unify America regardless of any differences in ideological views. Obama is not trying to make a statement that he supports or opposes gay rights at all; in fact his choice for Warren to give the blessing is completely irrelevent to that. Obama asked Warren to join him on the historical day because Obama sees promise in many of Warren's accomplishments. Many democrats under Obama were furious at the choice of Warren but their emotions should be set aside because Obama was merely trying to unite America as broadly as possible.

I completely agree that Obama's choice to include a Republican in his cabinet was great. Reaching across party lines is essential for the executive branch to cooperate effectively. Like Tess stated, LaHood clearly has an open mind to issues regardless of his partisanship. Ultimately, Obama realized that instead of choosing people in his party, he should be choosing the overall best qualified for the job. LaHood clearly is well-equipped for the position. Hopefully the diversified cabinet will be able to collaborate smoothly and point America in the right direction.

Being a republican, I obviously also think that it is wonderful that Obama is reaching across party lines to appoint members of his cabinet. The most qualified person should be appointed for each position regardless of party and the democrats already control everything so a little party diversity is definitely needed. The same would go if republicans controlled everything. tyranny of the majority is never a good thing. and as for the dems who are freaking out about Obama appointing repubs to cabinet offices, they should chill because the offices that are held by republicans are relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

It doesn't seem to me that she's very qualified for the US Senate yet, but I do think she's qualified for lesser offices--maybe state senate or the US House at most. She has spent her whole life around politics--that's got to count for something. I'm sure she learned a lot from that. Also, she has been on the boards of several non-profits and other organizations, so she has leadership experience. But these qualifications don't automatically qualify her for the US Senate--I would say that's the most prestigious elected office you can have, besides prez, vice-prez, and maybe governor. I don't think just anyone with no prior political leadership experience should be there. Maybe in a couple years, Caroline.

the pictures are presh laura!

I think that while I would lovovoove for the Obamas to adopt a shelter dog it would be very difficult because of Malia's allergies, especially if they want a true mixed breed dog from the shelter. You never know what kind of dog it's going to grow into so that might be problematic. I think whatever dog the Obamas pick will suddenly be very popular. I agree that it's no one's business but I mean he publicized it so I guess he wanted America's input or at least didn't care if America knew. Regardless of what kind they get it will be loved and that's what matters :).

I do believe that snl does cross the line sometimes, but I do not believe that this is a bad thing. People like the snl writers push the boundaries of what people feel comfortable talking and laughing about i think that this most of the time can be a good thing. as for making fun of the governor, yes of course he was offended, but the skit was not joking about his disability but his coke use and sex sandal. those were the real jokes in the skit. it would be crossing the line to make fun of someone who is disabled to get laughs.

Yes, at least if he resigned he would leave office with a vestige of his dignity. Even if he goes on to become an upstanding citizen, this incident will always mar his record and impeachment would just make it worse. I mean, what I want to know is how he thought he could get away with this!

I think this is ridiculous. People need to grow up and learn how to take a joke. A secure and mature person should be able to make fun of themselves and not go crying to their mothers when someone says something about them they don't feel comfortable with. SNL was not being vindictive in any way and it is obvious that bringing attention to his disabilty was not the purpose of the skit.

He needs to take some advice from Jimmy Buffett "If we didn't laugh we would all go insane".

get over it.

I think the huge crowds will make this a difficult event to pull off and a great amount of work obviously, but it does show increased interest, whether or not it is because attention to the fallen economy - which I think it is at least partially - and this can only be a good thing, that participation in politics is a good thing for the country. To see so many people engaged in this turning point for America is definitely a step forward.
